A prescription begins with an assessment.

Make room for the question of whether a medicine fits at all.

A question to carry

How will the assessment decide whether this medicine fits my concern?

Put it in my notebook ↘

A learning path. No treatment steps.

Write down what brought you to the search. Use your own words. You can ask the clinician to explain how the proposed medicine relates to that concern.

Leave room to go back and forth

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) gives state boards advice about care by phone, video or messages, also called telemedicine. Its advice on online assessment rejects treatment based only on a questionnaire with fixed answers or one that misses information needed for proper care. Even with a questionnaire that changes with your replies, the clinician needs to be able to come back with further questions.

That advice is not itself law. The rules a doctor must obey come from the state, and states differ; this was checked September 26, 2026.

The federation’s May 2026 prescribing guidance rejects a menu selection on its own as a basis for prescribing. It also calls for clinicians to let patients ask their own follow-up questions.

Before paying, ask how that back-and-forth works. Who reads the history? How can you correct a misunderstanding? Can you ask a question before a decision is made?

Ask what tests would answer

As of September 26, 2026, federal law contains no general rule requiring blood tests for every prescription. Tests may still be needed for your visit under state rules, good medical practice or special testing rules for a particular medicine.

The FSMB’s advice for state boards gives the doctor these options for a needed test: do it, arrange it or refer you to another service. It also calls for an examination in person when the medical problem requires that.

What would this test change about the decision?

A question to ask before agreeing to a test package.

Ask what happens if the clinician decides against the proposed medicine. Also ask what follow-up is available if the plan leaves you with new questions.
