Behind the hormone offer

Choose a visit you can ask questions in.

Think about the conversation you need, as well as the journey to it.

A question to carry

How will this service handle the parts of care that cannot happen in this visit format?

Put it in my notebook ↘

A learning path. No treatment steps.

Consider either a visit in a clinic or a licensed service that offers remote care. Telehealth is the name for care at a distance; it may use video, a phone call or an exchange of messages.

Ask each service how you will meet the clinician, how questions work and how follow-up is arranged. For an online visit, ask what happens if part of the assessment needs to happen in a room.

For an online visit, place still matters

For a remote physician visit, the patient’s location determines which state’s permission to practise the doctor needs. The federal health department’s licensure guidance explains this principle; its enforceable detail depends on state rules, checked September 26, 2026.

The medical boards’ advice about remote visits does not call for live video at every first visit. It allows other ways to begin seeing a doctor, such as exchanging messages, only if the care meets the required standard. This is advice; the state’s own rules decide what is allowed, as of September 26, 2026.

The advice holds remote visits to the standard expected in a room. The doctor must be able to gather the information needed for care and ask follow-up questions; a fixed questionnaire alone is not enough.

Can I ask, understand and ask again?

A practical test of whether the visit format works for you.

Keep an in-person option in the conversation

FSMB is the Federation of State Medical Boards, which gives advice to state boards. Its guidance on care at a distance calls for needed tests and examinations to be done or arranged. If the service cannot provide them, the doctor must send you to someone who can.

Before the visit, gather your medicine list, the treatment name you were offered and the questions you most want answered. Add any past records you want the clinician to consider.

If the screen visit cannot answer the question, what happens next and who arranges it?
